All students are welcome to stop in for a thoughtful and tasty evening as we welcome Mr. Mark Shea to CMU. As a writer on Catholicism and culture, and an occasional freelance actor, he has more than a few interesting observations on the interplay between classical drama – or even theatre in general – and the Gospel. Theatre, broadly considered, has a sacred character, in virtue both of its origins as well as its purpose. Religion – Catholicism especially – likewise of its nature tends to the dramatic. They are related as well as distinct, from the perspective of their subject – the human “person” – which is to say, the human “mask”. Come for a fascinating and enlightening evening, and bring a friend! A light dinner will be served in conjunction with the event.

Carnegie Mellon University, University Center, Connan    Feminist for Life President Serrin M. Foster says “Women Deserve Better”

Serrin has led Feminists for Life of America since 1994.  Under her leadership, Feminists for Life has successfully advocated benefits for poor and pregnant women through the State Child Health Insurance Program, worked in coalition with other women’s organizations to defeat the mandatory “family cap” and other punitive child exclusion provisions in welfare reform, and helped to prevent poverty and coerced abortions die to threats to withhold child support through passage of the Enhanced Child Support Act.  Feminist for Life has distributed pregnancy resource kits to colleges across the country and is leading a discussion on developing practical resources for pregnant and parenting students.  In 1997, Serrin moderated the first Pregnancy Resource Forum in the country at Georgetown university.   Feminists for Life’s Pregnancy Resource Forums have helped to redirect contentious debate toward women-centered solutions, and inspired model legislation in Michigan.                                                                           For more information contact Catherine at cmulifematters@gmail.com

Bored on a Saturday Night?  Nothing to do but lay around and vegetate.  Well there might be a remedy for that.  On Saturday, Jan 16th at 8pm in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room there will an 80s Dance held by the Newman Club.  All are welcome to attend no matter if you’re from Pitt or Chatham or CMU or some other place.  Absolutely any student is invited so bring a friend; the cost will be $2, and food and drink and other yummy snacks will be provided, so get those old dusty 80s clothes out of the closet, come on down to the union,  and dance the night away.

This week’s story comes from Luke who was able to meet with a student from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).  He is a leader for the CMU Orientation team.  The orientation team puts on different talks to help freshmen assimilate into college life.  One of the talks is about “safe sex” and decision-making.  It is a highly promoted talk and really degrades the meaning of sex and how men and women view each other.  Luke was able to talk with him that day and a few weeks later was able to have lunch with him.  He was open to talking about the Church, his search for the Truth, and is even interested in learning more about Church teachings!  It is great to see students who want to live Christ-centered lives and see the Holy Spirit working in them even when they don’t realize it themselves!
