An Evening to Commemorate the Beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman

On Wednesday evening, October 27th, Saint Paul of the Cross Passionist Monastery and Retreat Center will present a program of reflection and music in honor of the recent beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman. The Program will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the Monastery Church. It will consist of presentations on the life of Cardinal Newman and the importance of his teaching and spirituality for the 21st century, as well as a musical interlude.

Our presenters will be Very Reverend Drew P. Morgan, C.O., Ph.D., Provost, the Oratory of Pittsburgh, and Reverend Jerome M. Vereb, C.P., STD. Musical interludes of Newman’s music will be presented by Benjamin Cornelius-Bates, Director of Music at Saint Paul of the Cross Monastery Church.

The beatification of Cardinal Newman has been a significant event for the Passionist Congregation. It was a Passionist priest, Blessed Dominic Barberi, C.P., who received John Henry Newman into the Catholic Church on October 9, 1845.

We hope that you will join us for this evening of prayer and reflection.

You’ve heard there’s power in prayer. Fr. Chris Saliga, OP, RN, wants to tell you why. He’s a Dominican chaplain at Walsh University in North Canton, OH, where he also lectures on health care ethics. Additionally, he serves as a columnist for the Catholic Exchange bioethics web page, an ethics consultant to The Dominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York, and a community representative on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the University of Akron. Prior to becoming a Dominican and priest, he served in the Army as a Combat Medic and Paratrooper, having trained with the Rangers, 9th Division. He’s worked as an Army and Marine nurse, besides also some time in private practice. He’s published on ethics questions such as patient autonomy and contraceptive freedom in healthcare. But he wants to tell you about the rosary, and its value – bodily and spiritually – for the sick person.

Fr. Saliga will speak Thursday, October 7, at 8:00pm, in Posvar Room 1501, and all are welcome. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals: don’t miss out! Please contact frjoshua@pittsburghoratory.org for more information.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THEIR WILL BE NO FIRST FRIDAY VIGIL THIS COMING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD. WE HOPE TO RESUME IN OCTOBER STAY POSTED FOR FUTURE DATES. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE First Friday Vigil September 3rd, 7:00 PM

Join us for the September 3rd First Friday Vigil at the Oratory. Confessions begin at 7:00 PM and the Vigil itself at 8:00pm. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for three hours, ending at 11 PM. You are free to come and go as you please, but use the front door (an attendant will be at the front desk). The theme for this month’s vigil is “Temple of God – Dwelling of the Holy Spirit”.

“I have come to set the world on fire and how I wish it were already blazing” (Luke 12:49). Our Lord desires to draw us close to His Sacred Heart and set us on fire for love of Him and the Kingdom. With Mary, whose Immaculate Heart loved our Lord so completely and tenderly, we seek to prepare a place for him within our hearts so that we might receive Him in purity and humility. Like St. Philip Neri, we pray that Our Lord will send his Holy Spirit upon us so that our hearts might burn for love of Him and those He has called us to serve.

The 8 PM hour is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the 9 PM hour to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the 10 PM hour to St. Philip Neri, whose heart burned for love of God and neighbor. Each will feature a litany, a brief sermon, congregational and silent prayer, and Gregorian chants led by the Oratory Schola Cantorum. We hope you can join us for at least part of the night and take refuge in the real presence of Christ.

“In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering.”

–Pope Benedict XVI
