Looking for an excuse to get some quiet time for a little reading or studying? Weekends are always a good time to spend at the Oratory front desk! Our needs are evenings and weekends – if any 2-3 hour period works for you, please consider offering the time. Every temple needs its Simeon and Anna keeping watch; maybe the Lord has given you the gift of time to use in His service. Please contact Nancy to make arrangements: campusministry@pittsburghoratory.org.

If you are extremely worried, as all of you should have been, about not having heard from the Catholic Anchor in a while, be comforted in knowing that it is not your fault. As this notice is evidence of, there have been changes in the leadership of the Anchor, and the elections were held quite late. I am now Editor-in-Chief, and have very big shoes to fill after Elise’s departure from the position, and I am only confident by reason of the capable people who have replaced the other very capable former officers.

The deadline has been changed one last time to October 30th. We are close to having enough articles, but I do want any of you who weren’t aware of the current situation to have a chance to write something if you wish. We have published a variety of submissions in the past, such as theological and philosphical essays, book and movie reviews, and poetry, and we are not averse to new ideas.

It’s the same drill: send submissions to thecatholicanchor@yahoo.com, and keep submissions to 750 or fewer words. Remember: the 30th by 9PM.

As one last note, if anyone is interested in contributing in some other fashion, consider helping out with distribution or copy editing. If either interests you, drop me an email.

I am looking forward to working with everyone,
Paul

This is my first post, so hopefully it works out well. Below are the names and descriptions of the committees that the Newman Club is forming to help out throughout the school year. Feel free to join one at any point!

Cooking - Perhaps one of the most important committees, the cooking committee would be responsible for making food for the legendary Friday Feasts that the Newman Club hosts. Members of this committee would all be called on once a month to help with these huge feasts, and perhaps one other week to help with other (significantly simpler) meals on Fridays. Additionally, at Carnegie Mellon, we will be having a simple meal on the third Saturday of each month. Only one or two people in the committee need actually know how to cook; the rest can just be people willing to follow orders and make good food. The first time this committee will be called upon is the Friday after classes begin (September 1st) for the first First Friday Feast.

Advertising - We need to let everyone on campus know what’s going on at the Newman Club, so we need a couple of people who’d be willing to design advertisements for the various Newman Club events. We have the software necessary to create the ads, so anyone with a bit of creativity could do it.

Flyering - Once we have ads, they need to get around campus so students can see them. This committee would just be a bunch of people that, once or twice a month, would be willing to post flyers for Newman Club activities all over campus. Since at Carnegie Mellon we are allowed to chalk the sidewalks to advertise for events, this committee could help out with that (weather permitting, of course).

Photography - We’d like a few people to be official photographers at Newman Club events. All this involves is taking some pictures at the various social events/Masses/retreats/service projects that are going on throughout the year. We can supply the camera, we just need someone willing to take the pictures. One or two people willing to do this would need to be at the events taking place on the Sunday before classes and the other events of that first week.
